What is compounding?

Compounding is the science of preparing personalised medications. Compounded medications are prepared specifically for a patient based on their doctor’s prescription. A doctor will specify the exact quantities of medicines to be mixed and incorporated into the final product.

Compounded medicines are custom made for each and every patient for a number of reasons:

If you are allergic to an ingredient found in a commercially manufactured medication, we can formulate a personalised medication for you. Ingredients which commonly cause allergies include lactose, gluten, preservatives and dyes.

Some medicines have an unpleasant, bitter or unpalatable flavour. Our pharmacists can flavour medications to make them more palatable without compromising the medication’s effectiveness. This is especially handy when dealing with patients who may refuse medication such as young children or even pets.

Dosage Forms

Medications can be formulated into a variety of different dosage forms to accommodate patient’s needs. The may include liquids and suspensions, troches (lozenges), and transdermal creams to name a few.

We can compound most dosage forms, including:

  • Capsules
  • Creams, Ointments, Gels, Pastes
  • Suspensions
  • Troches/Lozenges
  • Pessaries
  • Suppositories

Discontinued Medicines

Sometimes a large pharmaceutical manufacturer may discontinue the supply of a medicine for a variety of reasons. In some cases we can re-create that medication by compounding it for you.

Common therapeutic areas include:

  • Hormone replacement therapy
